At Voyager

We've arrived in the Margaret River, reckoned by at least one member of the party to rank amongst the more interesting places on Planet Earth. Dipped our toe into the wine-tasting scene this afternoon, with a visit to Voyager. Delicious Chardonnay for the adults and a tutored grape juice tasting for the other team members.

Beasts under the Pier

A couple of days ago we decided to take a literal plunge, and do our first open water scuba dive. Prior to leaving Blighty we'd done our PADI theory test and confined water dives, in the relaxed and friendly confines of the local town pool. On arrival in WA we were disappointed to be told that though PADI allows ten-year-olds to do their open water diver course, Western Australia imposes more restrictive requirements and prohibits those from under 14 from scuba diving.

So the kids spent the day with a nice local girl, while E and I strapped on scuba tanks and headed off to the Navy Pier, a relic of the cold war US occupation of this side of WA and (happily) a marine structure which has been colonised by a broad and stunning diversity of local fauna. It is ranked as one of Australia's top dive sites.

We did two supervised 50min dives, separated by 30mins surface time. First feeling was fear. Dropping into the vast ocean, under a massive rusting steel structure, was scary. Next sensation was discomfort.. both of us encountered severe ear equalisation problems as we descended down the first five metres towards the foot of the pier's concrete base. Maintaining the right level of buoyancy (ie not floating up or down) was tricky, too. And the perennial nagging concern "I am now too deep to pop up to the surface if I have a problem..".

But those worries evaporated after 15 or 20mins, and we started to explore the surface of the ocean. A real treasure trove.. We had close encounters with reef sharks, rays, huge shoals of tiny fish and a 500kg turtle. A giant old grouper sits in pride of place under the pier, attended by a large fan club and malevolently staring down any impudent divers who venture into his presence. There were stonefish, parrot fish, clownfish, Moorish idols, fusiliers, mahi-mahi, baby barracudas and much else. A marine paradise that will serve as an excellent incentive to the completion of our PADI course in a cold Leicestershire quarry..

Looking for whale sharks

Today was one of the highlights of our stay in Exmouth, a day on the ocean swimming with the biggest fish in the sea. We and fifteen others had an early start, and were spotting manatees and snorkelling off a boat in the reef lagoon by 8.30am. Then we snuck through the gap in the reef and headed into the open seas, with a spotter plane two thousand feet overhead helping the skipper find whale sharks.

As soon as a whale shark had been spotted, the boat stopped 300yds ahead of the shark's direction of travel, and we'd jump into the sea to intercept it and swim alongside for a while. Quite an experience - the whale sharks we saw were up to six metres long, and weighed five or six tonnes each. Vast, sleek and powerful. Each shark was accompanied by a coterie of hangers-on, fish who clean off the dead underbelly skin and leftover food between its teeth. The effect is like the serene progress of a gigantic emperor, attended by obsequious courtiers.

My experience of the day was a little blackened because I was seasick for about an hour but after I had got rid of my breakfast (chucked up) everything got a little brighter.

When the 'spotter' yelled "action stations" we jumped in the water and paddled through the water to get to it.

I have to admit, seeing the whale shark looming out of the darkness was scary. It had lots of little spots that looked almost majestic in the poor light. We went snorkling afterwards and saw lots of fab fish!
I would recommend this to anyone!

The Ningaloo reef

Ok,this is a picture is of a lighthouse and people normally associate a lighthouse with fishing (anyway I do) But actually this (special) lighthouse is different. And actually it is part of the NINGLOO REEF (which if you didn't know is a mini barrier reef) Which us as a family think is REALLY COOL (no doubt about it) and swim in the sea nearly everyday ( except for 1 day) and the rest of the day we either do jobs or just RELAX.

There are some AMAZING fish out there on the reef. For example, we went out snorkelling today and we saw a shark, a ray, and LOADS of other fish.

Sunset on Cable Beach, Broome

This morning we explored Windjana Gorge, and spotted various freshwater crocs soaking up the early sunshine. There were also some interesting fossils in the limestone reef cliffs, the remains of a barramundi (presumably last night's dinner for one of the aforementioned crocs) and a variety of glittering quartz pebbles.

We then bade a reluctant farewell to the outback, and drove the final 100kms of the Gibb River Road and then down to Broome. Must confess, it was a relief to switch off the Snail's engine after nearly 3000kms in ten days. The road time has been fun, though: David Copperfield on the audio-CD, Who-dunnit mysteries, a biography of Galileo on the kindle and other diversions including endless comparisons of car stats from Top Gear. . .

We're now camping next to Cable Beach, a five kilometre stretch of flat sand. The campsite is a poor relation to the romance of the last week of bush-camping next to 350m yr old gorges. We're crowded in next to 150 other campers on a shingle drive. Suspect that we will be on the hunt for alternative lodgings tomorrow. But carpe diem.. we are watching the sun set at a local restaurant overlooking the beach, and planning tomorrow's exploring of the local environs. A lovely view!

This is a post on the peculiar bird called the Bower Bird.

While playing hide and seek at the campsite, C spotted a strange nest. It was like a hollow tube made of sticks. If you went around it, (at both ends) there was a collection of white rocks and inside a collection of black rocks.

A kind lady said it was made by a Bowerbird. I (as the local bird watcher and lover) had heard of the Bowerbird before and made up my mind to see it. I sat down further off and brought my binoculars and waited.

My efforts were fruitless but later on I saw a glimpse of it carrying a white rock in its beak.


Bowerbird Research :

Bowerbirds are known to decorate their nests in a peculiar way. They are also known to cultivate the bushes around them too!

He (the male) chooses a spot close to a special type of plant and uses the fruit to decorate his nest. (ONLY the inside) He finds some rocks and flowers to decorate the out side. Research proves that the plants near the nest are greener and healthier than the plants further away.

Sunset at Windjana Gorge

After a few hours on the road, travelling from Fitzroy Creek up the old cattle tracks towards the Gibb River Road, we arrived at Tunnel Creek, and spent a happy lunchtime exploring the caves that the creek has cut through the old sandstone cliff.

Now we're sitting back with a cup of coffee, gazing at the towering steeples of the Devonian reef/rockface at Windjana Gorge as the sun sets. After the sun goes down we'll start a bit of open-air bbq cooking. Glorious!

The Snail in the Bungles

We've had three days in the Bungle Bungle, a stunning set of sandstone cliffs over an area of 450 sq.kms. In the middle of nowhere.. you have to travel 2hrs on a 4WD track off the main highway to get there. Camping in scenic (but basic) bush camps, and enjoying hikes in beautiful countryside.

It's 5pm and it's dark

When we crossed over yesterday from the Northern Territory into Western Australia, the clock changed by one and a half hours. That makes sense a thousand miles west of here in Perth, but here in Kununurra it means that we are having a BBQ at 5pm amid the growing gloom. It's a little bit like Blighty in November, save that it's still 32 degrees centigrade here.

Feeding catfish on Lake Argyle

After our 600km interstate drive yesterday, we're having a lazy day in the lush town of Kununurra, on the Ord River dam/delta. We've spent the morning planning our trip into the Kimberley. We leave early tomorrow for the Bungle Bungle, a remote series of beautiful gorges and other rock formations.

A saltwater crocodile leaping out of the Mary River in Kakadu. We spent three days last week exploring the park, a series of craggy escarpments overlooking millions of acres of tropical woodland and croc-filled rivers.

Self-catering in the Kakadu has been a effortless challenge. So far, (apart from the hotel) we have not eaten in a restaurant. At the start of the journey, we filled up the van with food and water and have been running on the supplies ever since. We have decided to eat dinner early because eating and cooking in the dark is a challenge( because of the mosquitoes). Lunch is always sandwiches and dinner is pasta with tomatoes but it is looking up! Chicken stir fry!
I think over all, cooking in Australia is a. BIG success!

Through the river

Hooray! Got to use the 4x4 snorkel on the first day! Well, about 40cm of water, which was enough to get us into the swing of things.

Wet season just finishing so some roads completely inaccessible, others open only to 4WD.

Amazing birds - egrets sitting on buffalos' backs, black kites swooping in the sky. Sea eagles as big as albatrosses.

All aboard the Snail!

Now travelling with our home (four beds and mini-kitchen) on our back - and at roughly the same pace as a snail too. Just left the Crowne Plaza hotel in Darwin, with its incredible breakfasts (high point of which being a juicer with abundant fresh fruit) and heading for Kakadu National Park.
